it’s time to take a breath.
i’ve been thinking a lot about self-promotion the last six months or so, as i’ve planned a change in my career that is now about to take effect. i’ve also been doing some self-promotion, and reconnoitering the landscape of self-promotion in parts of the tech, internet and start-up scenes here in new york.
i haven’t loved everything i’ve seen. i haven’t loved everything i’ve done.
self-promotion can, indeed, bring out the worst in people. being amongst self-promoters too much of the time can lead to some very unattractive behavior. i’ve learned this (or perhaps relearned it) the hard way. i’ve had days when i really loved who i’m becoming and what i’m developing; there have been days when not just crawling under a rock but bashing my head in with it seemed like a good idea.
so i’m taking a moment. during Internet Week, i listened to some amazing speakers share great ideas and useful provocations, i met interesting people doing cool work, and i went to too many parties. but i also found time to reconnect with some people that i love and some people that i admire, and beginning next week, i’m going to refocus my mission on prettylittlehead. starting on june 15, the day my new life as an entrepreneur begins, there is going to be daily posting on the blog, as well as a new section in one of those side columns for basic link blogging so i can more effectively share ideas i think are interesting.
the point of prettylittlehead is to stop worrying – it’s going to be great. so the content focus will shift a little towards the core area of interest for me, which is what i refer to as ‘micro-behavior.’ that is, small steps towards your goals. my personal areas of expertise are in brands and communications and media, but what interests me now are the small, incremental moves that people make to improve their lives and businesses, experience the full value of something, or simply to learn/get better at doing what they do. micro-behavior, in my view, is what ultimately creates culture.
so.
next week, a new outlook, a refined focus, and a few new features. in the meantime, have a nice weekend.
