Very well written and you've hit all the points that have bothered me for years (both when I was at an agency and now that I'm at client side). I'm hoping you can help fix this and I'd be very interested in learning from and using your service. Currently, I don't have very much faith in the quality of research data due to many of the factors you've listed above. Another big factor for me is the involvement of money... overall, I find the best results come from actual users of the product and those who voluntarily or proactively participate in feedback.

Hey there.
Thanks so much for reading my post and including me in yours. Funny, I'm having an offsite with an agency tomorrow to determine the role of planning within their organization. I was online, curious to see what other planners have to say about planning and there you were!

Great article Farrah.

Seems to me that insights and the entire planning process are there to give clients the belief that things have order, and there is a clear proven reason for everything. The truth is that many insights are post rationalized to give reason for the idea that has already been created.

Planing doesn't really flow like it should, what you read in case studies isn't often what really happened. Real life is messy, gut driven, human.

We're not machines, as much as we'd like to pretend we are. We're human and as such we're irrational and emotionally driven creatures.

The advertising industry needs to grow some balls and admit that some ideas, some solutions, can't be quantified, can't be proven but can perform better those that can.

I guess it's all about risk and the avoidance of it.

Ad agencies should be risk takers, the ones who will make the difference, challenge, break free of convention.

More and more often it's as if agencies have been slowly pushed in to a box of proof, rationale and numbers.

All are essential for evaluation but in the process of creation they should be treated with extreme caution because often there only role is to confirm what people already believe and restrict freedom of thought.

I was an account executive for 6 years and was always wishing my job was EXACTLY what you described here. After reading this I was inspired to finally have my tires hit the road and changed over to a role in Creative Strategy. I love it! It's my calling! Thank you so much for explaining that role so eloquently. If there are any other reads or ANYTHING that you could recommend that would help me become a Muse and a Siren better and faster I would be soooo grateful.

Again, this literally changed my life :)...no joke!
